On The Road Again
I find myself heading out once again onto the road. This time it’s just a day trip to Indy, but still its hours of my day spent in a car driving some place.
I used to love to drive. I mean I spent days of my life in a van driving from camp to camp for 3 summers in a row while in college. From Michigan, to Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and even into Canada it never once bothered me.
I’d drive for youth group events, I’d drive for college events, but now anything more than about 30 minutes and I’m like, “ah man, do I have to?”
Yes, I have to.
When I’m traveling with Michelle and the boys I don’t mind it at all, but when I’m by myself it seems like I’ll never get there. I think in the back of my head it’s the knowledge that I’m driving away from the ones that I’d love and rather be spending time with. 4 hours in car just seems like wasted time.
So this is call out to you scientists out there. What’s your problem already? I mean honestly Star Trek has been around since the 70’s and we still cannot transport matter from one place to the next? What are you freakin’ lazy or something?
Goodness sakes, you can waste hours on making my stick razor battery powered but you can’t spare a little bit of time to get me from one place to the next instantly? Digitize me already!
Oh well, I guess they’re too busy making mega-corps oodles of dollars for useless things to make use of their God given talents.
You know despite my whining about driving I seem to keep scheduling myself road trips. In May Michelle and I are heading back down to Indy to see Jason Mraz (if you’re not a Jason Mraz fan you should be. Hand’s down, go to your iTunes account and download his cd’s.) Heck, just go to his website (http://www.jasonmraz.com/) the man gives away so much live music you could spend a week listening to it all (okay, so that’s a lie, I only have 22 hours worth of the stuff). Go… now. Do it!
In June Michelle, the boys, Grandma & Grandpa and I are all heading up to Detroit to watch the Tigers play the Boston Red Sox, so that should be a good time.
July Michelle and I are making the uber trip to Canada (Stratford) to see the Shakespeare festival and then make our way over the falls for a night and on top of all of that, I’m already blocking out my schedule for the 2006 Andrew Peterson Christmas concert.
Now granted, we like to fly when we can, but sometimes have the fun is getting there.
That’s one of those things I struggle with on so many levels: The joy is in the journey, not always in the destination. I rush through a lot of things just because I want to get to the end result that I miss a good chunk of the fun.
Stupid impatient American!
So today I am going to leave a little early (like right now) and take my time getting to Indy and to enjoy the time I have alone to think, reflect and renew. I breath. To slow down, to take joy in my journey (that is unless some stupid driver gets in my way and then I’ll show them… opps, sorry about that – rotten inner voice getting out again).
Slow down. Take a minute, enjoy the road you’re on.
I’m outta here.
