Intervention
Intervention: “To involve oneself in a situation so as to alter or hinder an action or development”
A new show premiered on A & E television on Sunday called, Intervention. The general premise of the show is that various people who are struggle with some sort of destructive behavior (gambling, drug addition, cutting, etc.) are put through an intervention by the people they love in hopes that they will change their behaviors and enter into a treatment center.
The first episode dealt with drug addiction.
The two folks who were on the show thought that they were being filmed by a documentary on the subject of addiction and agreed to let the cameras into their life. The first young woman was a brilliant student, graduated valedictorian, interned at the white house for several years and had a very promising future.
Somehow she got caught up in drugs and dropped out of college one semester from graduating. She ended up moving back into her parents house where she continued to do drugs on almost an hourly basis. She would steal medication from her dying father to use as her own. I was broken hearted to sit there and watch her cries for help, and then anger and back again.
The other guy was an investment banker I believe and made almost 200k a year and got caught up into doing cocaine. In one year alone he spent over $100,000, sold his house, sold his car and almost everything he had.
Now a year later he is homeless, has to steal food and none of his friends know what’s happened to him. He’s dropped off the face of the earth and when they do see him, they have no idea of what his situation is.
A lot of times I do my best to make out how I hate people and how much they drive me nuts, but when I watch something like this my spirit is shattered for those people and the struggles they have gotten themselves into.
I understand when Jesus sighs in the bible why he did it. To see what his plan and his creation has come to. The pain, the hurt and the emptiness.
It makes me stop and wonder where I would be right now.
Where would I be if my life had taken a slightly different path?
What if Don Brown never came out to our house and invited us church?
What if my Sunday school teachers didn’t offer prizes to learn scripture?
What if Tim Watkins never took us to CIY?
Where would I be if I had never found God?
Where would I be if someone hadn’t intervened on my behalf?
