Mr. Bob Goes To Washington
So I find myself in our nation’s capital.
I’ve never had the chance to make my way to this historic city and was excited for the chance to go. However, Michelle wasn’t able to join me so I had mixed feelings.
Call me old fashioned, but I’m the kind of guy who really likes to share those important first time moments with someone close. We’ve always wanted to go and I felt bad seeing the moving sites of the city without her.
My solution was simple. I didn’t.
Granted it was hard, but it was more important for me to see them with her than it was for me to see them at all. But, that isn’t to say that I didn’t do some exploring of the city and learning how it all fit together.
City life amazes me. We stayed at the Westin Embassy Hotel (right on embassy row) and within walking distance was everything you could possibly need to survive (including 2 Starbucks and 2 Subways). Bookstores, restaurants, entertainment places, the bus, the metro (subway) and all things in between; even though the weather was cold it was a beautiful city to just walk around in.
One of my personal highlights was that I got to ride the subway for the first time. It was rather intimidating when I first saw the hole to drop down into the Doupont Circle station; the escalator just seemed to drop down straight into the bowels of hell. But for a subway the D.C. metro seemed to be very clean, well maintained and I didn’t fear for my life.
In fact I still have money left on my ticket so when we head back I’m all set.
did manage to head down to the new Smithsonian American Indiana museum. I wasn’t really impressed to say the least. For a four story building it was rather empty. Good thing they’re free to visit because I would have felt cheated.
All in all it wasn’t a bad trip, but I certainly look forward to going back with Michelle soon to explore the city and all its wonders. Oh yeah, and going when it’s warmer.
Oh I almost forgot, our hotel was next to The Society of the Cincinnatti and a block away from the Church of the Pilgrim. You never know what sorts of little known societies you’ll find in such a historic city.

My kids and I recently watched a PBS/Nova special on the restoration of the Declaration of Independance, the constitution and the bill of rights. It was a facinating show detailing how they took them out of their casing (that was suppose to last forever), restored them, and put them in a new and improved casing.

Definately perked our interest in making the six hr journey north to check it out-as well as to take in other historic sites as a family.
