Stuff you could care less about

So I took the day off today. The election is over, I don’t have to watch CNN 24/7 for the next 39 days. No hanging chads, no provisional ballots, no court cases, it’s just over. I can sleep again.

So what am I doing on my glorious day off? I’m cleaning the den, vacuuming the floors, piling board games, networking computers, checking video games, and doing two side projects (one paid, and one for E.B.G.G. with the help of Bobby Rothrock). The good news is that most of this is being done because my buddy Nathan Prong is making the long trip down from Coe, MI to hang out for the next three days (well two half days and one whole day) to play some PS2, PC games, board games, watch movies, shop at Best Buy, and just generally relax.

I love it when Nathan comes. Nathan was always the guy I competed for and against. It’s an odd relationship we have. We like to go head to head, but we love more than anything to take on the world together, its more fun that way. We each have our own strengths and weakness, but they match up pretty well and we can take on the world.

While we were in college we used to play EA Sports NHL Hockey 93 (I believe that’s what it was) on my old 33 mhz PC. We had two little Nintendo like controls plugged into the back of my top of the line Sound Blaster sound card. We’d play that game for hours and we’d kill the computer. We wouldn’t consider it a victory if we didn’t win by at least 10 goals. It got so bad at one point, we had to start treading players to other teams just to beef them up. Good times.

It was funny how our friendship started, we had both won scholarships for Outstanding Christian Leadership to Great Lakes, and it was the first time there were like co-winners and Nathan wanted to come and meet me to check out the competition. We stayed up until 4:00 am just hanging out on the front side of the guys dorm chatting.

The next day Nathan broke into my dorm room and moved my desk outside and set it up like it was on the inside, including all my desk items. Boy did I want to get him back But how? You had to demonstrate your dominance, but yet not provoke this endless back and forth battle. So while Nathan was sleeping I broke into his room.

I covered him, and his entire wall (while he was sleeping) in sticky notes. They read, “You were mine, but I showed mercy. Remember that.”

We’ve been best guy friends ever since.

It’ll be a fun weekend. I don’t know how much rest I’ll get, but it’ll be fun.
