A collection of past events
I don’t know where the time goes some days.
Moments pass by faster than I can count them and I find myself lost in a sea of forgotten happenings. I’m swept out to sea by the tide of time and before I can take control I am miles from the coast with little hope of returning to the shore.
That’s one of the advantages of writing every day. It gives me pause to take all the things that have transpired and give them some structure and prove to myself that my days have not been wasted by my passing.
So here’s what you missed while I was out:
Movies & Television
————————–
I had a chance to finally watch Mystic River. There is a collection of movies that I have on my Tivo that I simply haven’t gotten to yet. Here’s the rub: DirecTV now offers local channels here in Fort Wayne; however to be able to record them, they have to upgrade my Tivo. Great, a new free Tivo, rock on. Well, the problem is they’re going to take my current one away. DOH! Which means I have to watch all those movies I’ve been putting off before they show up.
Mystic River was an interesting movie. I don’t know that it was worth all the Oscar buzz that it received when it first came out. What I found interesting was the choice of kids they had playing the young Jimmy (a mean looking red-headed kid who was the tough one on the block with short buzzed hair) and the young Sean (with wavy black hair). Because when they are older, Jimmy (played by Sean Penn) sits at his desk with his long wavy black and white peppered hair. While Sean (played by Kevin Bacon) his really short cropped almost reddish hair.
All in all it was a gritty unhappy little movie about three boys who grew up in the city, one turned into a thug, one a cop, and one the victim of molestation and how that effected them.
I’m finally done with Season 4 of Stargate SG-1. I’m still totally digging it and I cannot wait to find time to start Season 5 (mostly because of the cliff-hanger than ends every season). All I can say is thanks Jon for kindly sharing all of that.
I also had a chance to watch the first 5 episodes of Cowboy Bebop.
I wasn’t sure at first what I thought of it. The style was rather different, but the music was very beatnik and I liked that. By the 3rd episode though I was pretty much hooked. It seems to be good stuff. I’m getting ready to try out Neon Genesis Evangelion (as recommended by Ben Brown) so I’ll let you know how that goes.
Man, I’ve totally missed Survivor this season. Thursday nights just don’t work for me (which is part of the reason I am excited to get local channels on DirecTV so I can finally Tivo stuff and watch it later). I basically don’t watch network television at all because the reception on Comcast Cable sucks (granted, their cable modem rocks, but I’ve never been impressed with their reception).
However I did catch The Rebel Billionaire on Fox (which I think I will probably watch), Tree House of Horror XV (which I wasn’t really impressed with) and My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss (which cracked me right up). So how knows. We’ll see where time leads me.
Lastly on the movie front Michelle, the boys and I are all going to see the Incredibles this weekend and I’m pretty pumped about it. Then next week its Polar Express, which we are also excited about as well.
Music
——-
I’ve been on a Counting Crows kick lately as that seems to be all that I am listening to in the car (unless I’m with the boys, and then its either Classical, Andrew Peterson [Dafyd's favorite] or The Saga Begins [just the one song] by Weird Al). I’m not quite sure why, but it seems to match my mood as of late.
I’m ashamed to admit it, but I’m digging the new Ryan Cabrera CD as well, catchy little tunes on there.
Oh, and this is the horrors of all horrors. I was flipping through channels last night and I some how ended up on CMT and God help me, I kinda liked it. Some guy named Toby Keith singing, “How do you like me now?”, some Faith Hill, and some group called Sugarland, “Baby Girl”. Man, what’s happened to me. But this pissed me off, what do I see? I see Shania Twain signing “Party for Two” which she sings with Mark McGrath on VH-1, with some other guy (Billy Currington), and it’s the SAME DANG VIDEO! What in the world?
For all you folks out there who have HD, I’d check out Bravo HD+’s Music in High Places. It’s a pretty cool show. I had a chance to catch it last night with the Goo Goo Dolls as they went to various places in Alaska and the Artic Circle and sang songs acoustically. They also have one coming up with The Calling that I’d like to see as well.
Lastly, has anyone caught the new John Mellencamp (formerly known as John Cougar Mellencamp) song, “Walking Tall?” The video was pretty cool (that VH-1 on Saturday mornings).
Life
—–
Life continues to be busy, but I am sure that doesn’t surprise many of you as you too have the many ins and outs that you pass through. I’m hoping that I only have 6 or 7 months left of working two jobs, but it can be as much as a year or so. UGH. That idea doesn’t really thrill me, but it’s what I need to do, so I will. I have a little mini-vacation coming up around Thanksgiving, so I’m just trying to make it to those little milestones as I walk down this road.
Had a couple of game nights which have been a lot of fun, more on those tomorrow I am sure.
Other than that, it’s just been work. But I’m grateful to have a job (two of them in fact), good friends, wonderful kids and to be alive.
I find it too easy to left the little things in this life get me down. It’s easy sometimes to despair and wallow in your own depression. But on the whole, life isn’t so bad. I think I’ll stay around a while.
OH, OH, OH! I almost forgot. To Dafyd (the one in England), I haven’t forgotten you yet, you have an email coming, once I get around to finishing it that is.
Until then, I’ll see you on the net.

Your going to love The Incredibles Bob!!! I saw it Tuesday night and it is my new favorite Pixar film! It reminded me a lot of a Bond film too which was interesting. Daniel mentioned that it looked a lot like Moonraker. The short cartoon at the biginning was kinda dumb, but all-in-all a great film. Plus there’s that little bit about a teaser trailer for some well-known science fiction epic that plays before the film. Enjoy!!

Bob,
You can get all of your Tivo’d events off of the hard disk before you have to give it back.
Setup a Linux box that has XFS file support (any Fedora distro will work)
Hook the HDD from the Tivo to the box and mount it as an XFS partition.
Then just copy all the files to the linux box, change the file extension. An viola you have MPEG encoded files that you can view with just about any media player.
There are many websites dedicated to doing this with some great how-tos. Use your Googling prowice and you’ll be off to the Tivo hacking races. Enjoy… Bunce
I have a hacked Tivo Box, but from what I read, you cannot hack the Huges Tivo that I have down stairs… bastards!
Buncey Baby, its prowess. prowess. P.R.O.W.E.S.S. prowess.
Bob, I’m glad that I’m not the only one who is entertained by My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss.
