Nubbly Cobble Cloth

Sunday is hot chocolate day.

Every Sunday I have a hot chocolate whether I need it or not. My favorite is the caramel praline from Expresso’s on Scott road, but it’s about a 15 minute trek from the Newspaper and then I have to drive all the way back to the north side of town, so I don’t get it as often as I like. So I’ve had to suffer with the packet kind, which isn’t too bad. If that’s all I have to complain about in my life, then I certainly need to consider myself blessed. However, if someone knows of some great HC that you can get for home use, feel free to let me know.

There is someone wonderful about a fall day. The smell, the color, and the texture. I love the feel of fall. I love the touch of dry leaves, the sound they make when you walk through them, kick them up into the air and then listen to them fall back to earth. I love to hear them as breeze moves between them seeking to dislodge them from their tenuous perch; I love the smell of the earth. It’s warm, dry, alive, almost sweet. And I think most of all, I love the smell of your hair and clothes after you’ve spent the day outside. So here I sit, drinking my hot chocolate enjoying this fall day.

It’s not quite the perfect fall day, that’ll becoming up shortly. I look forward to it every year since I’ve moved into Fort Wayne. It’s normally in mid-October. The day is warm, dry and the sky is brilliant with high cirrus clouds. I start in Fort Wayne and I drive slowly down Saint Joe Road (not to be confused with St. Joe Center, Saint Joe Ave, or Old Saint Joe Road) towards Grabill. The road is almost completely devoid of houses and is canopied by trees. I open my windows and take in the smells of fall, and I listen to the stillness around me, and I watch it rain. Leaves tumble by the hundreds from above and I inhale the day, I take all that is good about the fall and pull it into my soul and bathe in its wonders. I can close my eyes and feel it still. I feel at peace, and all is right in the world and every care I’ve ever had in my life is cleansed from me with each passing leaf.

And then that’s it, that’s the end of fall. Normally the next day it rains and all the color is washed from the earth and everything is replaced with gray tree trunks, and all that is left is the shell of forests. The air turns cold, damp and winter starts to slowly seep into your bones, but even that cannot take away the warmth of that one perfect fall day. If you live in the Fort Wayne area, keep your eyes and nose open, it’s coming soon, and I’d encourage you to take the drive down Saint Joe Road.

Today has been a good day. The Lions won. Who knew? I mean honestly, if you had asked me if I thought the Lions could be 3-1, I’d say no, let alone winning 2 road games in a row. What in the world?

Michelle spent most of the day working on homework and preparing for tests. I watched the first 3 discs of Season 1 of Star Gate SG-1 that I borrowed from Jon. It’s been pretty good, what cracked me up the most I think is that in the pilot episode one of the lady’s uses the term “MacGyver-ed together”.

It was nice to take a minute, and breathe. I forget to do that sometimes. Just breathe. Close my eyes and take a breath.

(Oh and for those wondering, today’s title comes from a Lands End catalog. They described one of their shirts as being made of nubbly cobble cloth. Nubbly. What a great word, but doesn’t it become sort of redundant when you add it to cobble? I mean isn’t cobble already nubbly by nature?)

  • I love fall too! To kick up your average package hot chocolate mix, add a little bit less water than the directions call for, and add a teaspoon of Creamora before you add the boiling water. It makes it a little richer and creamier.

  • Hey there Mom Soulliere. It’s Ben Brown, how are you?

Oh, and uhh… nice post Bob. I love fall too.

  • Hey Ben Brown! We’re great, and it’s so nice of you to ask. How’s your family doing? Send our love.
