CORNfusing

So yesterday (Friday) was probably the last nice fall day (and I believe I said that at least a dozen times) and our friends Bobby & Stephanie invited Michelle and I go to the corn maze just outside of Fort Wayne.

For you Fort Wayne natives, it’s located out on US 30 at Hilger’s Farm. Now, it’s been about 5 or 6 years since I last ventured into a corn maze (or maize to be correct) and that was at good old Uncle John’s Cider Mill north of Lansing and that was nothing to write home about. Any how we headed over there about 6:45 in the evening armed with flash lights (since it was dark after all).

As you can see from the picture above this place was HUGE (click it for a larger view). You started out in the smaller “scare crow” maze and then headed out and into the “pumpkin maze” when you were done. Through out the maze there were numerical check points. Before you headed in you were give a sheet of questions, then based on your answer you either went left or right. You could pick the type of questions you wanted to be asked anything from Halloween to spiritual to sports and all stops in between. We choose Halloween topics with sports as a backup (well Bobby picked sports because I wouldn’t be of any help), and headed into the maze.

Now, I don’t know that I’m the right person to bring into a maze if you want to wander around for a long time and have that fun “lost” feeling. I’m the head strong guy that plows in and conquers the maze as fast as I can. I’m a no nonsense guy that employs a system of logical deduction and a good internal mapping system (it comes from years of playing 3-D Maze type games to get from the beginning to the end as quickly as possible.

So with everyone else in tow I charged ahead. We finished the first maze in about 45 minutes (which was 15 minutes longer than what the recommend time was), but we attribute that to the fact that the question card had 10 questions on it which we though were all in that maze, so we found 3, but could not find 4 so we kept wandering around until we gave up and found our way out. When we started the second maze we were later greeted by the number 4 (DOH!) and realized our mistake.

The second maze was huge, including two bridges. This time I was all business and somehow we motored through the whole thing about 30 minutes. We only got suckered into a dead end once, but it was a lot of fun.

When we got finished we spent another 15 minutes watching this girl in the super bounce try and figure out how to do a front and back flip. It was hilarious; she couldn’t figure out that she had to use her legs to swing her body, she just kept trying to either bend at the waste or throw her head back to no avail. Then we packed up and headed back home. It was a fun time. If you’re in the Fort Wayne area, it was 6 dollars well spent (if you go to the website: http://www.cornfieldmaze.com you can get a coupon.

  • Now that sounds pretty cool. Last year, we went to a local corn maze (maize maze?) called Uncle Shuck’s. More like, Uncle SUCKS.
