Stuff of Earth

September 11th is still hard for me. Here it is three years later and I am still moved to tears when I think about it. I didn’t know anyone who died, none of my friends or family almost died, yet I am still broken hearted for the loss.

I remember flipping through to CNN that morning, and seeing the first tower on fire and calling upstairs to Michelle, and then watching as the second plane crashed into the buildings. I just remember crying and I don’t know why.

2001 was a hard year for me. In July I moved out of Grabill into Fort Wayne, I started full time at the Newspaper, September 11th hit, and Michelle and I were almost killed in October. At lot of things changed in me in that short span of time, and a lot of things changed in our country.

There is a line from a Switchfoot song that goes like this, “I dare you to move like today never happened”. How can you experience something like that and not be changed? It seems we are fond of touting “We’ll never forget”, but live like we were never affected.

We are a people who forgets often. “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.”

Our faith is no different. Do you remember the day you first believed? When you learned that God loved you, that your sins were forgiven? How your heart was both broken and healed at the same time. How elated you felt, how free.

We will never forget, but we won’t always be affected.

I dare you to move like today never happened.
