Alien Life Form
For those of you who don’t subscribe to the weekly Best Buy ad, you may not know that the long wait is over. A.L.F. season one makes it way to DVD today. Personally I stood in line at Meijer for over 6 hours waiting for it to hit 12:01 a.m. so they could legally sell it. Of course I was so overwhelmed by the excitement of it all, I passed out (okay, I fainted). But when I finally got home, I couldn’t stand it any longer, so I tore open the packaging and spent the rest of the morning reliving the 80s through the images I saw. However, with all those great episodes I was a little late to work this morning, and I’m dead tired, but man, it was worth it.
Okay, so ya got me. That didn’t happen. But, A.L.F. season one does come out today on DVD (not sure I’m going to buy it, as I said with Knight Rider, I want to cling to my nostalgic past, but I know that I most likely will never watch them more than once, and in the end it just becomes another “thing” that I have). However, all this has gotten me thinking about the subject of aliens.
Is there intelligent life out there?
Well, if you’ve visited Fort Wayne lately, you’d be hard pressed to answer “yes”, but again I digress. I always used to wonder when I was a kid if aliens existed. I had seen the movies, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars, Flight of the Navigator, and that one movie about the flying tilt-a-whirl that escapes me right now (The Explorers – thanks goes to Michelle for triggering that thought at lunch). The idea had to come from somewhere. Could it be possible that aliens are real?
Would that be so bad really? The idea that in the vast expanse of the universe that God created that there was other life? Are we so self-absorbed that we have convinced ourselves that we are the only living beings in the entirety of space?
Do you know how much space is out there?
A lot.
Yeah, that’s right, a lot. Why wouldn’t the all powerful, creative God that we worship use some of that creative power to make other things, other living beings? I mean, he did make the angels right? Yet God didn’t stop there after he made them. A while later he made man. Who is to say that somewhere between angels and man, God made something else? Or, perhaps after man he made Mankind 2, this time it’s personal.
While we are on the subject, let’s talk about space shall we. Is the universe really limitless? Is it really expanding towards infinity? If so, then what is it expanding into? Nothingness? Is nothingness therefore then the true eternal space? How can nothingness exist? If something exists doesn’t it cease to be nothing?
Oh about this to make your head spin this afternoon; we believe that the sum of our universe is either wrapped in or paralleled by another realm of existence: the spiritual. If our universe can by wrapped or paralleled in such a fashion, why then cannot the spiritual be another layer in the onion of an unlimited experience?
All this is a little to heavy for my brain this morning, I’m still swallowed up by the concept of “eternal” and the phrase, “always was”. How can you always be? That just blows my mind. Since then all this is true, God has existed since time eternal (though most likely God existed before time – can time be both finite and eternal?), who can say that this universe is empty save us?
Talk about small minded. I mean come on, God even gave us instructions on how to deal with aliens in the Bible! Yes, that’s right, the Bible even talks about aliens, so if the Bible says it’s true, then we must believe it.
Exodus 23:9 tells us not to oppress aliens. Exodus 22:21 pleads with us not to mistreat them (shame on you Alien autopsy). Leviticus 18:26 tells us that aliens already live among us. It even extols us in chapter 19 that they should be treated as “native-born” and that we are to love them as we love ourselves.
What? I’m sorry, I don’t follow you. What do you mean I’m reading that wrong. The book says right there “aliens”, so it must mean aliens. Two kinds? What do you mean like from Mars and then some place else. Oh, an alien is anyone not living in his native homeland. Ohhhh. I get it now. That makes a lot more sense now when Peter writes to us about being aliens and strangers in the world (for a moment there I thought we were going to have to get into a discussion about how the earth was really populated by martians).
All kidding and rambling aside, in the end that is the truth that we must cling to, we are not of this world, we are in it, but not of it. As with everything I write, this is for me, and not for you (unless you feel it applies to you), never let us get so caught up in things, goals, jobs, and pursuits that we forget why we are here.
So to all you Morks, A.L.F.’s and E.T.’s: “This world is not our home, we’re just a passin’ through.”

Bob,
Interesting thoughts. I have thought the same thing many times!! Really!
Have you ever heard of the ministry called “Answers in Genesis”? Well, if you have, I think they are great!! If not, they are a non-denominational organization dedicated to defending the Bible from the very first verse — Genesis 1:1!! They have a really intriguing DVD called, “Aliens, UFO’s and the Bible – Are We Alone in the Universe?” It really made alot of things make sense to me.
You know all you blog guys have a really weird sense of humor and it has me addicted. I have to read yours and Regan’s every day!!
Anyway, it gives me a break after I settle the kids down for 5 MINUTES!!!
Angel
Hey Angel,
I think I’ve heard Kara mention that from Bryce a few times and I’ve found it all intersting. While my post was meant to be more off handed than serious, that doesn’t mean that those aren’t good questions. Perhaps you’d be willing to give us/me a short summary of the ideas and then we can pursue the matter deeper for ourselves.
